Reel Big Fish [Apr. 9th, 2005|02:00 pm]
[music |Reel Big Fish]

I've always been a fan of Reel Big Fish, but for some reason, for the last year or so, they'd just slipped off my radar. Rummaging the other day I found a copy of the "Cheer Up" album from 2002, played it in the car and fell in love with the Fish all over again. Here's some old favourites.

Reel Big Fish - Sell Out

One of the band's signature tunes from way back in the days of the "Turn The Radio Off" album. Catchy, dumb lyrics and loads of brass make this the perfect starting point.

Reel Big Fish - Somebody Loved Me

One of the stand out tracks from the aforementioned "Cheer Up" collection.

Reel Big Fish - The Set Up (You Need This)

Quite easily one of the band's best - and catchiest - songs. You'll be singing it for days.

Reel Big Fish - Take On Me

The greatest cover version ever recorded. The Fish take the A-Ha classic to completely new levels and make it one of their own.

Then I find out that in the USA the lucky beggars are already experiencing the joys of a new RBF album. Here's a completely unexpected gem from that new opus called "We're Not Happy, Til You're Not Happy".

Reel Big Fish - We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful

Not only do they put out a new album, they also decide to cover Morrissey on it. A totally unbelievable choice, the Fish make Mr Miserable sound like the time of their lives. Long may this career continue!

Regina Spektor [Mar. 29th, 2005|02:49 pm]
[music |Regina Spektor]

This time's focus is on Russian born New York singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. Having built up a following on tours with among others The Strokes and Kings of Leon, she's built up quite a cult following of her own, with witty and irrevent lyrics, and quirky piano backings. Another UK tour is booked for May, if you want to check her out first hand - which I can strongly reccomend!

Regina Spektor - Prisoners
A song from Regina's second full length, "Songs", which catches her at her awesome lyrical best.

Regina Spektor - The Ghost Of Corporate Future
A session version of one of the stand out tracks form last year's brillaint "Soviet Kitsch" album. Great melody, and some of the best lyrics you're likely to hear. This is the song that really shows Regina's talent.

Regina Spektor - Folding Chair
Another session track, this time of an unreleased live favourite, that is sure to feature on a future release.

Trying Head [Mar. 6th, 2005|02:55 pm]
[music |Trying Head]

Today we focus on Bishopbriggs ska/punk/rock/bizarre band Trying Head. Consisting of 9 members the abnd have had numerous releases to their name and are currently writing and demoing for their new album, due out in the summer. For now here's a couple of tracks from their archives.

Trying Head - Peter Pan and The Quest For Never Never Land (Remix Edit by Steve)

An edit of a track from the band's first full-length "Orange Peel Mafia". It's a song about helping a younger brother pull a girl called Georgia. She may or may not ahve been chuffed to bits to have a song written about her and it's still a staple of the band's live sets.

Trying Head - Man Down

The lead track from the "Zanzibar" EP and will also be included on the new album. An instant Trying Head classic with politically charged lyrics and a cracking beat. It's their live opener and best known song.

Trying Head - In Words

From the "Ghostbusters" EP released in 2004, this showcases the band at their chaotic best.

The Bravery [Feb. 28th, 2005|06:29 pm]
[music |The Bravery]

Today we're showcasing New York electro-indie newcomers The Bravery. This is a band who have already built up a bit of a following on these shores and have been tipped for big big things.

The Bravery - Unconditional

The song that introduced these eyeliner clad new rock heroes to the world. Voted at number 48 in CT Music's best 60 singles of 2004, this was part KIllers, part Strokes, completely brilliant. The song that launched what looks like a promising career.

The Bravery - An Honest Mistake

The second single. You probably saw it getting performed at the NME Awards, you may even have seen them performing it on CD:UK with that gormless gimp Dave Berry. Wherever you heard it, it's going to be a very big hit this weekend, and I suggest you check it out.
